Addressing Health Literacy and Numeracy to Improve Diabetes Education and Care.

Health numeracy is an important component of health literacy that affects diabetes care. This article details current research in the field by highlighting efforts to address health literacy and numeracy as a means of improving diabetes education, self-management, and glycemic control. The authors provide evidence from their past and ongoing research in this area and offer guidelines for assessing literacy and numeracy skills in the clinical setting.
